About Our School

Mount Vernon High School supports the District’s mission statement of, “Fostering growth and confidence as learners and people in society” by providing a comprehensive academic program including over 30 core courses in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.  Mount Vernon High School also offers five advanced placement courses on campus, and 9 advanced placement on-line courses in addition to access to college level/credit courses through Kirkwood Community College, the University of Iowa, Cornell College and other higher education institutions.  Students also have access to high-quality course offering and activities in the fine and practical arts. Finally, Special Education teachers and support staff passionately serve students with learning and social-emotional challenges.  All of this combines to ensure Mount Vernon High School is true to the mission of the school district. 

The high school also offers an extensive elective course curriculum including music, visual arts, industrial technology, business/information technology and family and consumer science classes. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in varied extracurricular activities and programs, including 15 competitive sports through the WaMaC Conference and many special interest clubs, including archery, robotics, academic decathlon, newspaper (The Mustang Moon), science olympiad, student council and more.
